Rules of Roulette – Learn it All Before Playing!
As far as I can tell, roulette rightly deserves the name “King of Casino Games.” Among the things earning it this phenomenal description include its sheer elegance, an awe-inspiring playing experience, and unrestrained popularity around the globe. But to get all these benefits out of roulette, you will need to have a rudimentary grasp of its basic rules first.
This article is precisely the guide you need to achieve this goal. Any questions you might have about this game and what it entails will hopefully be fully addressed in this guide. Then again, if you are not sure how well you understand the rules of this game, then you will also need to go through this rule guide to understand where you stand in this regard.
1. How to Play Roulette
A roulette game consists of a table and a wheel. You will place your bets at the table. The wheel will then be spun and used to determine if your bet has won or not. All the numbers present on the roulette table are also on the roulette wheel. When the wheel is spun, a ball is rolled on top of it as well. And when the two (the wheel and the ball), come to a stop, the pocket the ball rests on is the result of that roulette round.
Each of these pockets contains a number and a specific color. This information will be used to establish whether you have landed on the color you bet on (Red/Black), or the specific number you chose. If your prediction turns out to be right, then you will get paid by the casino, otherwise, the bet will be lost.
Depending on whether you are playing American or European roulette, the wheel will usually have 38 or 37 numbers, respectively. The American roulette version has 38 numbers because of the double zero pocket in addition to the zero pocket. This difference also makes the house edge for this game much higher, which is why it is usually advisable to play European roulette instead of American roulette.
Since there are so many numbers to bet on, specific number bets are usually quite hard to achieve since the odds of being right are quite low. For this reason, most people bet on red/black, odd/even and dozen bets because their chances of winning are much higher.
Roulette has several bets. But the easiest way to understand them is to understand the two major classes of roulette bets – the inside and the outside bets. There are five kinds of inside bets, and four kinds of outside bets. The inside bets are straight bets, street bets, split bets, line bets, and corner bets.
The outside bets, on the other hand, are red/black bets, even/odd bets, column bets, and dozen bets. But why are they called inside or outside bets? It’s simple – the inside bets are found on the inside part of the roulette table, while the outside bets are to be found on the outer parts of the roulette table. Here’s a closer look at each of these bets.
This is the best-paying bet in roulette, since you will get 35 times your initial bet if you win. Placing this bet is pretty easy because you just have to choose one of the numbers on the roulette table while placing your bet. Clearly, with 37 or 38 numbers in a roulette wheel, the odds of succeeding with this bet are pretty low, which also explains why the payout is also so good.
This bet involves predicting that the outcome of the spin will result in one of the three chosen numbers. You will place this bet by placing the chips against the three roulette numbers you suspect might come up during the spin. With this bet, you will be paid 11 times your initial stake if you win.
This bet is similar to the street bet, except for the fact that you will be betting on two numbers instead of three. You are supposed to place your bet between the two chosen numbers. The payout of this bet is 17 times the initial stake.
A line bet is a bet on a group of numbers as well, 6 to be exact. With this bet, you will bet on numbers in two adjacent rows consisting of three numbers each. The bet is placed just like the street bet, but at the line separating the two rows. With this bet, you will be paid 5 times your initial stake.
This bet will involve selecting four numbers. To place the bet, you will have to place your chips at the intersection of the corners containing four numbers. The payout for this bet is pretty good since you will get 8 times your initial stake as the payout.
Red or Black Bets
This is an even money bet, meaning you will get double your initial bet if you win. As the name suggests, you will bet on whether the color that comes up next is red or black.
Odd or Even Bets
Again, this is an even money bet. The bet is made on the possibility that the number that comes up will be divisible by two, or not.
Column bets are made on any of the three columns of roulette numbers. The bets are made on the areas marked 2 to 1. The payout for the column bets is 2 times your initial bet.
This bet involves choosing a dozen of numbers. The first dozen has the numbers 1 to 12, the second 13 to 24, and the third 25 to 36. The payout for these bets is similar to the payout for column bets because you will get 2 times your initial bet as the payout.
Above are the basics of roulette. With this information at your fingertips, you are more than ready to engage in your first roulette game. But this is not all there is to playing roulette. You should make a point of mastering a few roulette tips and strategies, which I have also posted on this site.
