BLACKJACK Updated on: 1 September 2018

Forget for a moment the rules of blackjack as you know them; and in particular, the idea that its always you against the dealer with this card game. Blackjack tournaments constitute an entirely different kind of ballgame. In these exciting events, you will have to pitch your blackjack skills against other players. And the rewards are not like the ones casinos will typically give you for playing regular blackjack.

At tournaments, you will win handsome sums of money as rewards. If you think you have the skills to take part in a blackjack tournaments, or even have a passive interest in them, here are a few things you need to know about them.

1. What's A Blackjack Tournament?

Suffice it to say that a blackjack tournament is an even at which blackjack players come together and face off against each other in exciting blackjack games. But that’s not the whole story. In tournaments, it is not just the dealer you have to beat, but other players as well.

This obviously raises the bar considerably when you consider that a great set of skills would be needed to win a blackjack tournament. Not surprisingly, most participants are seasoned blackjack players with formidable playing skills.

Types of Blackjack Tournaments

There are two major blackjack configurations in tournaments. The first is called a single table blackjack tournament, while the other is called the multi table blackjack tournament. Here are more details on the two setups.

Single Table Blackjack Tournament

In this kind of tournament, the person with the highest number of chips by the time the game is complete wins the competition. This is the easiest blackjack tournament of all.

Multi Table Blackjack Tournament

With this blackjack tournament, you have to play at different tables; and if by the time you are done you have the largest bankroll or chips, you are declared the winner. But to move to the next table, you have to lead in the current table.

This tournament is obviously a little more complicated and time consuming than the single table blackjack tournament, but it also pays better. The fee required to join in such a tournament is also much higher.

How You Can Participate in a Blackjack Tournament

Being part of a blackjack tournament requires the payment of an entry fee during the sign up process. When playing the games, you will typically be given chips by the casino. The reason for this is obvious: so that every player starts out with the same bankroll.

Each blackjack tournament also comes with its special set of rules. Be sure to check them out so that you don’t feel blindsided during the game when a rule comes down on you to your disadvantage. Anyway, here are some of the more common rules you will find in blackjack tournaments.

Rotating Starter

With this rule, the advantage that would come from being in a particular position on the blackjack table is eliminated. This is because the first player at each round is rotated clockwise when the next round begins.

Secret Bet

This rule stipulates that the player’s bet during that hand of blackjack will stay secret until the player is done playing. This rule is meant to prevent other players from placing their bets based on what other players in the table are staking.

Two Players Per Round

This self-evident rule means that two players can proceed to the next table, rather than one player. This obviously works only in multi table blackjack.

Two Players One Round

In this case, two players are allowed to go on to the next blackjack table, but only for one round. From there, only one player will be allowed to proceed to the next stage.

Re-Entry Fee

Even after you have lost and are kicked out of the competition, it does not mean you are done. You can still pay a re-entry fee and continue taking part in the competition.

How To Win At Blackjack Tournaments

Being the last player left in the game is usually one of the ways you can become the winner in a tournament. At this point, every other player in the competition will have exhausted their bankrolls.

In some cases, the player with the greatest number of chips after 30 hands have been played becomes the winner; and that’s if there are any players left in the game at this point.

How People Lose At Blackjack Tournaments

Certain situations will get you kicked out of the blackjack tournament. One of them is losing all your chips. Another thing that could get you kicked out is having less chips than are required to place the minimum bet.

Finally, having the fewest chips after a given number of hands have been played can get you eliminated from the competition. In some tournaments, these eliminations happen in stages. For instance, the player with the least amount of chips can get eliminated after the 8th round, the 16th round, and the 25th round.

Blackjack Tournaments More Common at Online Casinos

Many online casinos now offer blackjack tournaments in an attempt to raise awareness for the game and encourage people to try its version of the game. The rewards can be quite lucrative in some of these cases. As for the land-based casinos, tournaments are not as common.
